Chapter 20

U. S. S. Maine Was a United States battleship that exploded in the Havana Harbor and was a major spark in the Spanish American War.

Yellow Journalism Was when newspapers seeking to increase their circulation sensationalized reporting about problems in Cuba and the Philippines. It led to the United States declaring war on Spain.

Anti-Imperialist league Was created to oppose the idea of the United States creating an empire. The organization members believed that imperialism violated our countries ideals and voiced their concerns.

1 The mass media encouraged expansion of the United states abroad and built public support for the war with Spain.

2 The United States emerged as a new world power because of the Spanish American War. With its victories the country won control over vast areas of the Pacific.

3 In the Treaty of Paris Spain ceded Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States and sold the Philippines for 20 million. Cuba was given their independence which did not last long.

4 The United States keeps a military base on the island of Cuba to maintain a presence in the area and influence Cuban politics.
