Spanish American War Summary Causes-Cuba is Spain’s colony. The Cubans want independence. Cuban rebels burn US sugar plantations in Cuba forcing the President to send the USS Maine to protect US interests in Cuba. When the ship is destroyed, the US goes to war with Spain and wins.

Spanish American War Outcomes Cuba becomes independent US gains Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, Pacific Islands and the right to have Cuba sign the Platt Amendment. US pays Spain 20 million The people of the previously mentioned places will not become US citizens.
