Timetable for the day 2pm-2.10pm: Welcome, Introduction and aims of the session – pm: Business: an overview – pm: Westminster – : Break – pm: UEL – pm: Group discussions pm: Panel session pm: Round up and evaluation

Introductions What institution do you come from and why have you decided to come to the workshop today?

Business: An overview –

Business: An overview A very popular course choice - The 2013/14 Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey (DLHE) indicates that 38,000 or 11.2% of all UK domiciled first degree graduates studied business and administrative subjects. The employment rates across all business-related subjects were above the average for all graduates and the average salaries ranged between £16,500 and £28,000. Some courses are particularly academic and self-directed, others are aimed at those which require a more practical, skills oriented approach. You can combine the study of Business with almost anything you can think of. Career opportunities, graduate from these degree courses are in considerable demand. They enter public administration, the civil service, transport, communications, commerce, accountancy, banking and insurance, the armed forces, not-for-profit organisations. In fact it is relevant to any career stream you can think of.

So what does this all mean? The advantage is that there is lots to choose from … but we need to ensure the learner is choosing the right option for them. The disadvantage is that there is lots of competition. So how can learners stand out and how can they choose the right option?

Advising your learners Use some of these helpful web resources 1. = Good for those who don’t know what they would like to study. Has a subjects/interests questionnaire which provides degree subject suggestions based on your answers = Compares courses from different universities. You can see what students thought of the course (through the National Students Survey), the average salaries after finishing, how many students go into managerial or professional level work, how much teaching time you can expect on the course and more! 3. Has lots of information and filters to help you find a course to suit your needs. It also has information on how competitive a course is by telling you the percentage of students applying who receive an offer = Focuses on how you can use your degree and the areas you could go into after graduationwww.prospects.ac.uk

Advising your learners With some much choice it’s important for learners to think about what kind of Business would best suit them.. research is key! Not only this, but also what HE qualification and mode of study is most suitable.

HE Qualifications and Mode of Study Is full time the best option? Is HE in FE an option? What style of assessment would be best? Is a HND/Foundation Degree etc. a better option?

Choosing a course to set learners apart Work placements in industry Year abroad Professional recognition Opportunity to learn a language Joint course options

Examples from Linking London partners: FE Barnet and Southgate BSc Top-up Degree in Business FT and PT Bromley College of Further and Higher Education BSc Business Top Up (Part-Time Evening) City of Westminster College FdA Creative Music Production & Business The College of North West London BTEC HND Diploma in Business Harrow College HND in Business ( Feb start date) Newham College of Further Education BA (Hons) Business & Management (FT and PT) - validated by Open University Uxbridge College HND Diploma in Business Westminster Kingsway College BA Honours Degree: Business and Enterprise Management Level 6 (Full time) - top up

Examples from Linking London partners: Universities We will be hearing more from Westminster and UEL later Birkbeck, University of London FT and PT, and all evening studies GSM London BSc (Hons) Business Management with Creative Industries Goldsmiths, University of London Additional year option with a placement in industry Kingston University London Business Management BSc(Hons) with business experience - PRINCE2, membership of the CMI, option to learn a language SOAS, University of London International Business (DEPARTMENT OF FINANCIAL AND MANAGEMENT STUDIES)

In summary Your learners need to write an effective personal statement demonstrating why they are suited to the course so research is key. They need to take full advantage of the study options and consider their course carefully.

Breakout session

A few things to think about before we start… 1.As of June 2015, the total number of applications made to UCAS was 673,040, a 2% increase from last year. 2. Of this total 28,280 applicants were over Second to A- Levels BTECs are the most widely held qualification held by applicants, according to the UCAS end of cycle report (2014). 4.On average 20,000 Access to HE students apply each year for a degree course.

Discussion Groups Focusing specifically on Access and BTEC learners in your group discuss: 1.What are the key factors to consider when supporting learners who want to go on to study Business at HE? 2.What additional support, if any, do your learners need when applying for higher education/ or do you anticipate they would need? Then, come up with 3 questions per group that you would like to present to the panel to answer.
