Pointillism Is a technique of painting in which a lot of tiny dots are combined to form a picture. Usually done in oil paint because it is thick and does not bleed or run.

Why pointillism was done? When two colors are right next to each other your eye mixes them in a process called, "optical mixing.” This creates a brighter picture. Your eyes are performing a trick.

Who is George Seurat? He was the first artist to paint in the form of pointillism. He did this because he felt that mixing colors dulled them. He liked to do things in his own way. He loved dots.

George Seurat He worked in Paris. Painting a pointillist piece is a slow and painstaking process. "A Sunday in the Park on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is one of his famous pieces that took him two years to complete.

George Seurat This painting covered a wall that was 81 inches by 120 inches. "Sunday in the Park" has approximately 3,456,000 dots!
