COMPARE AND ORDER DECIMALS GRADE 3

Hello, How are you doing? Today, we are going to start a new lesson on Compare and Order Decimals.

Compare Decimals Decimals are compared the same way as whole numbers. Ways to Compare Decimals.  Using Models  Using Number Line  Using Place Value Chart

Comparison using Model To Compare 0.9 and 0.5 Ones in both numbers are equal. On comparing Tenths we find that 9 tenths > 5 tenths. Thus, 0.9 > 0.5

Steps to compare decimals using Model Compare the ones first. If ones is same in both cases, then compare tenths. If tenths is same, compare the hundredths. Decimals having greater tenths or hundredths is greater.

Place Value Chart Decimals can be compared using Place Value chart. To compare 2.39 and 2.46 Ones.TenthsHundredths > 4 Thus, 2.46 > 2.39

Steps to Compare decimals using Number line Step 1: Line up the decimal points. Compare the greatest place first. Step 2: Compare the next greatest place. Step 3: order the decimals from least to greatest.

Compare Decimals using number line  Place the decimal points on the number line.  The number on the left of the number line is least.  The number on the right of the number line is greatest.

To compare 3.5 and 2.7 using number line is on the left of the Number line. So, 2.7 < 3.5

Which is greater: 1.6 or 1.65? 1.65 is greater than 1.6 Ones.TenthsHundredths

Arrange the numbers from greatest to least. 1.6, 1.5, 1.25, 1.85 Answer – 1.85 > 1.6 > 1.5 > 1.25

Circle the smaller number a) 2.56 b) 2.65 c) 2.05 d) 2.06

The fifth grade students held a contest to see who could run faster in a certain amount of time. Nadia ran 1.65 miles. Jack ran 1.63 miles. Who ran faster? a) Nadia b) Jack c) Both ran at the same speed d) Information is insufficient

Arrange the numbers from least to greatest. 2.3, 4.6, 2.5, 1.2 Answer – 1.2 < 2.3 < 2.5 < 4.6

Which of the pair of decimals are equal? a) 1.8 and 8.1 b) 3.5 and 3.3 c) 0.33 and 3.30 d) 1.5 and 1.50
