Warwickshire Open Meeting 22 nd September 2014 “The coaches have their say”

Warwickshire Open Meeting 22 nd Sepember 2014 Ryan Smith WSoR Phil Llewellyn Nuneaton RFC Andy Savage Nuneaton Old Eds RFC “The coaches have their say”

Welcome to our guests… Thank you for giving up your time this evening Session Aims –Increase our game knowledge –Build relationships with club coaches –Improve our refereeing of what matters

Conor O’Shea & Richard Cockerill in 2013 We try and take officials out of the equation but it was very hard to take him out of the equation. We'll go along the same lines we always do. Or we'll potentially just give up. If you are feeding stuff in and it's not being listened to or acted on... there are things you tear your hair out [about]. Conor O’Shea You can understand Conor's frustration. As a coach you're diligent and you do your homework. You talk to the people in charge and say: 'This is what I'm observing, is this illegal?' If it doesn't get looked at, the perception is that the official hasn't done as much homework as the teams have. Richard Cockerill “ “ ” ”

How do we avoid such incidents? Dialogue’s key –We must understand what coaches want & (within the law) try to provide this –We both have a responsibility for what happens on match days Preparation –Whatever the game we must prepare properly Honesty –Must be honest with ourselves & others

My Approach Open and Honest Learning Opportunity We more the players and coaches learn the easier the referees job Seek Clarity not Negativity Reduce the Risk through Compliance

Pre-Match Clarity on contentious elements of play A heads up on what we do Clarity from you on your process

Half Time Are you happy? Clarity on your approach to decisions What feedback can I take back to the players? Pose you questions for an area to review

Post Match Open and Honest discussion Feedback from the players and captain to you on your performance Questions on specific decisions to clarify and feedback to the players (learning opportunity)

What do we want to see? The same as you expect to see from the players Desire to improve and reflect/act on feedback Willingness to listen to feedback Humility to admit a mistake

Q&A Ask anything… (This is your chance) “Expectations of a referee on match day”

Take Home Messages The clubs are our customers Build on the relationships built tonight Prepare for the game properly as the teams do Show the respect you expect to be given Be open, honest & prepared to engage in positive discussion after the game If you have an issue don’t ignore it –You could be back there next week

A huge thank you to our guests for supporting this evening! Good luck for the rest of the season! Finally…
