Exploring the World through Boxes A WebQuest for Honors Probability & Statistics (Data Analysis)

Introduction There is so much information available through the use of the Internet. You are going to use a small part of this information to investigate statistics available about the countries of the world and see how to make sense of the information you gather.

Task You will be investigating four different statistics from 10 countries around the world in order to compare and analyze them. You will investigate how Box- and-Whiskers Plots can be used to effectively communicate this information to others. You will then construct these plots using a computer program called Fathom to present the information you find. You will work with a partner. This WebQuest is designed to be completed in a single period.

Process First: Gather Your Data. Find the needed statistics for each of the assigned countries. Second: Use Fathom to calculate the required statistics and design your Box and Whisker Plots. Third: Summarize your findings in a Word Document.

Gathering Data Your task is to gather the data about the 10 countries to be used by your group. For each of the following countries, gather the data for male and female life expectancy. Use the countries of Australia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Egypt, India, Iraq, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. For the same 10 countries, gather the data for male and female percent literacy. You will find this information on SIRS Discoverer. For directions, click here.here Record this information on the World Explorer’s Findings page and share this information with your group members.

Directions for Gathering Data To get started, begin with The World in Focus: Fast Facts on 193 Countries 1.Read the top of the article to make sure you understand how the data is displayed. 2.Find each of the required countries on the next slide and fill in the required data.

Statistics Your task is to take the data found and use it to create Box- and-Whiskers Plots to illustrate this data. Open up the Fathom Template. It can be found in Mrs. Whelan’s Outbox, it is titled Country Webquest. Enter your data in spreadsheet, also found in Mrs. Whelan’s Outbox titled Countries Webquest Spreadsheet. View the video found in Mrs. Whelan’s Outbox titled Fathom Directions. Then begin creating double box-n-whisker plots, and calculating mean and standard deviation through Fathom. Use the provided calculation instructions for mean and standard deviation.

Summary Open up Microsoft Word. Type up a report summarizing your findings. Your report should include: Name Title 2 Double Box and Whisker plots (1 for Life Expectancy and 1 for Literacy) – you can cut and paste from Fathom Mean and Standard Deviation for Male and Female Answers to the following questions: 1.Using the Box-and-Whisker Plots and standard deviation for Male and Female Life Expectancy, what conclusions can you draw? 2.Using the Box-and-Whisker Plots and standard deviation for Male and Female Literacy, what conclusions can you draw? 3.How did the format of a Box-and-Whisker Plot help you to arrive at your conclusions?

Evaluation The following rubric will be used to evaluate this Webquest. A maximum of 60 points are available on this assignment.

Conclusion Congratulations on completing this WebQuest! As a result, you should know how to use the internet and Fathom to gather and analyze data through creating box-and-whisker plots and also calculating statistics.
