(TN Writing)

Let’s take a poll: How long do employers typically look at a resume? Less than 30 seconds 3 minutes 1 minute

Resumes are… Your form of advertisement… Your resume should be: concise factual positive listing of your education, employment history, and accomplishments

What should you include in your resume? Heading Essential personal information Objective A one to two sentence explanation of the type of job you are seeking and why Education The high school you attend and your expected graduation date Experience Activities References, if applicable

Objective What are your career goals? What are your main qualifications Strengths, skills, areas of expertise What position are you seeking? What type of organization would you like to work for?

High School Objectives To obtain knowledge of the day-to-day work of a business through a part time job, summer internship and/or job shadowing experience. Reliable and mature high school senior seeking a part-time retail sales position with a youth-oriented clothing environment to gain experience and insight into the fashion industry for a future career in fashion and design.

General Objectives To obtain a position in the ______ field where I can utilize my work experience and education to improve company’s operations. To obtain a position as a _____ in a _____ company while continuing my education.

What Should be Included Overall: Major Headers (used in most, if not all resumes): Objective, Education, Employment History, School Activities, Skills and Abilities Minor Headers (may be used if applicable): Computer experience, associations, certifications, honors/awards, interests and hobbies, and volunteer experience

How do I arrange the information? Chronological Format—Follows your work history backward from your current job and back Functional Format—Concentrates on skills and responsibilities instead of work history

Chronological Format Best when job experience is stable and increasingly responsible. Most advantageous for recent college graduates. Best if looking for work in the field of your experience. Preferred by most employers. . 1st Job 2nd Job 3rd Job

Functional Format Best for career changers. Best for someone who has limited work experience but a great deal of volunteer work Best for someone who has been in the same position for a number of years

Resume Format Limit your resume to one page Use one inch margins Blank lines between sections At least a 10 point font

Common Mistakes Poor spelling/grammar Lying about your experience Providing too much information One page. Improper formats/paper Professional document. Don't use bright paper or stationary.

Ultimately… Your FINAL resume should be PERFECT
