Computer History By Collin Bledsoe 5 th period
Known as the father of the computer. Mathematician, Philosopher, and Inventor. Creator of the difference engine. Although it was not successful he is still credited for it. All though it didn’t work his parts were later proven to have worked.
Difference Engine Designed to tabulate polynomial functions. Both logarithmic and trigonometric functions can be approximated by polynomials. So this could be very helpful. Most of these initial plans are still in modern day computers. Created in 1812.
A system or method of finding and removing the number of bugs, or defects in a computer program. Came from Admiral Grace Hopper. Moths getting stuck in here Plane’s engine, she remarked that they were debugging her engine. The saying was not adopted by Computer Programmers until the 1950’s. The saying was also used by Einstein.
Some are still debating whether or not its original date is but most scholars believe Created by the Soviet Union after launching Sputnik into space.
The tabulating machine was an electrical device designed to assist in summarizing information. The 1890 census took 7 years to calculate, so the Tabulating Machine made counting the numbers much faster. Instead of some people counting one by one the machine would calculate the numbers.
ENIAC was designed to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army. The ENIAC was a modular computer, composed of individual panels to perform different functions.
That was when, the advantages of the solid state device similar in function to a Triode Vacuum tube were understood and implemented. The basic advantage was compactness. A Transistor is an electronic device which amplifies electrical signals, or acts as a switch. Most of the research on Transistors was performed by Shockley in 1947.
(Father of the microcomputer) designed the first microcomputer, the Altair 8800, which was produced by Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems.
