Bullying is no longer about the strong picking on the weak in the schoolyard.

The physical assault has been replaced by a 24 hour per day, seven days a week online bashing.

No longer can we count on the tell-tale physical signs of bullying – a black eye, bloody lip, torn clothes. But the damages done by cyber bullies are no less real, and can be infinitely more painful.

With cyber bullying there is often no escape. School ends at 2:30 The internet is open poor grades emotional spirals poor self-esteem repeated school absences depression suicide

Statistics According to the National Crime Prevention Center, over 40% of all teenagers with Internet access reported being bullied in Girls are more likely than boys to be the target. There is a direct correlation to the amount of time girls spend online and the likelihood that they will be bullied. The National Crime Prevention Center found that only 10% of those children who were bullied told their parents and a mere 18% of the cases were reported to a local or national law enforcement agency Chat rooms, Facebook and MySpace are where most cyber bullying occurs, with various sources finding anywhere between 45% - 57% of all incidents originating there.

According to an extensive research on middle school age students and teenagers online, the fastest growing problems within the world of cyber bullying are: Stealing an individual’s name and password to a social networking site, then using their profile to post rumors, gossip or other damaging information. Altering photographs using PhotoShop or other photo editing software in order to humiliate the individual Recording conversations without the individual’s knowledge or consent, then posting the call online Creating confrontational and mean-spirited online polls about the individual and posting them on different web sites. Using web sites and blogs to post hurtful, embarrassing information about another individual.

What can you do? Be careful where you post personal information Tell a trusted adult about the bullying and keep telling until the adult takes action Don’t open or read messages by cyber bullies Don’t respond back – bullies are looking for and love an emotional reaction Avoid escalating the situation Tell your school if it is school related Don’t erase the messages – they may be needed to take action Document the activity Protect yourself – never agree to meet with the person or with anyone you meet online. If bullied through chat or instant messaging, the “bully” can often be blocked Report cyber bullying to the appropriate authorities If you are threatened with harm, inform the local police
