Presentation transcript:

A little bit about us We’ve been caring for patients and their loved ones in Warrington for 30 years, through our In Patient Unit, Day Unit and Family Support services 95% of our patients are living with cancer We are dedicated to helping each patient live their life to the full with respect, dignity and choice We believe in making every day count for everyone – our patients, our carers, our families and our loved ones

A hospice without walls We rely on the community for two thirds of the £3.2m needed to deliver our care each year The hospice belongs to this community, so we are committed to meeting their needs Launch of new outreach services in our 30 th anniversary year will allow us to deliver our care to more people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses

Inpatient unit 60% of those for whom we provide care haven’t come to us ‘to die’ – but to be helped to live more fulfilling, enjoyable lives; to get the most from their time. 10 bedrooms with TV, telephones, ensuite facilities, Admission for rehabilitation after treatment or to control complex symptoms. Average10 to 14 days stay, after which the patient may go home or to another care setting. Medical, psychological and social support.

Day Therapies One day a week, for a planned period of time. Personalised programme of care focusing on enabling people to live life to the full embracing every aspect of a person’s needs – medical, spiritual, emotional and psychological. Services offered:- - medical assessments, provided by a nurse, doctor or consultant, - rehabilitation from illness, to help people live at home, - symptom relief from conditions such as breathlessness, - a range of complementary therapies, including Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Reiki, Acupuncture, - counselling and emotional support, - support for families and carers - mindfulness, - diversional therapies such as art therapy and creative therapy.

Family Support People don’t exist in isolation – they’re usually part of a group of friends, family and carers. Illness can affect everyone, so we don’t just focus our help on the patient but also on those who support the patient. Help and advice Listening and counselling Bereavement support Helping family and carers

Medical Out Patient Clinics Three senior doctors run our medical outpatient clinics, with the focus around complex symptom control and improving quality of life. Clinics currently run on MONDAYS and WEDNESDAYS, covering complex symptoms including: Pain Nausea and vomiting Bowel problems Breathlessness Anxiety Clinics for paracentesis (the drainage of free fluid within the abdomen) on TUESDAYS.

Hospice At Home

“We are supporting families to help their loved ones during very difficult times, when there is only one chance to get it right.” For patients in their last weeks of life Night sits between 10pm and 7am (short daytime visits offered if more appropriate) Care provided by experienced healthcare assistants Complements existing care by working in conjunction with other services Referrals accepted from GPs, District Nurses, Macmillan Nurses, hospital discharge team or from Hospice staff already involved in care. Short-term service, ability to re-refer Pam Massey, CEO, St. Rocco’s Hospice

Rocco’s On Your Doorstep

Volunteers can offer support including: Sitting and chatting Reading Doing crosswords or jigsaws Doing light housework Shopping for a few essential items Providing transport and company for appointments Going out for coffee or a short trip Generally available for 2 hours a week, Mon-Fri between 9-5 For those recently diagnosed with a life limiting illness and requiring short term support The Hospice at Home co-ordinator will match volunteers with service users after considering individual needs Referral to service same as Hospice At Home

"A lot of patients hold things back from family and friends for fear of worrying them but open up to us as volunteers which is important for them.“ Brenda Campbell, volunteer “Rocco’s On Your Doorstep makes such a difference to carers too as just being able to have some time out often means the world to them. Time is the most precious gift you can give someone, as it’s the one thing you can never get back.” Roz Coleman, Voluntary Services Manager, St. Rocco’s

Ann Jackson, volunteer "The doorstep scheme started off with chats and a drink with the first lady I met and then I would take her to see her friends. "She really enjoyed the freedom of having someone to drop her off and pick her up during the day when her family were in work.” Ann Jackson, volunteer "The first patient couldn't really understand at first what I was doing visiting him as a complete stranger. "But we would sit and recall past times and subsequently became friends and I'm proud to have been invited to his funeral.” Ron Metheringham, volunteer
