QUESTnet Workshop Mobility Issues Mark Laffan Lai w Au Alison Lawes

Mobility Issues Strategies Policies Software Licensing Fleet management Migration between devices User demands Experiences Other issues

Mobility Issues - Strategies Work with Teachers and Researchers to leverage the technology to support Research and T&L. Prepare and develop a supportive environment for mobile devices. Develop an 'advisory' service to assist with purchases. Understand requirements for mobile users including remote access, durability, security. Investment in MS Lync and Adobe Connect systems Mobile Computers on wheels – video conf and collaboration

Mobility Issues - Policies Staff code of conduct – Use of personal Laptops for work must be approved by Manager – does not cover personal Smartphones/Tablets Draft security policy covers mobile devices – not quite there yet… Wireless network policy – only approved wireless networks to run on campus No policies for Smartphone/Tablets s/w purchasing No Data management/storage policy for Smartphones/Tablets

Mobility Issues - Software Licensing Software only licensed for University owned laptops (only) and MS work at home agreement Apple iTunes iDevice Apps – user pays per device, no volume license Android market place – unknown

Mobility Issues - Fleet management University owned laptops (Windows) – managesoft/SCCM Staff Apple iDevices/Laptops – no management & minimum support BES – Blackberry management (but these are being replaced by iPhones slowly) Student devices – no management & minimum support (iPhone/iPad/Laptops mostly) Security – no idea what data goes where, loss of device? iPhone data wipe if connected to exchange account (up to user to action)

Mobility Issues - Migration between devices ACU SharePoint service is available – iPad apps and web interface – not all Departments, no student access Use of Dropbox “appearing” – no polices on what types of documents allowed to be stored “in the cloud” iCloud? Skydrive? – ACU students have accounts

Mobility Issues - User demands iPads for loan – library, Labs etc iPads for teaching - support Apps and software for smartphones/tablets – licensing Wireless coverage in all areas (mostly covered now) inc Staff offices Wireless access – Proxy settings don’t work in some mobile devices – transparent proxy required Training for Smartphones/Tablets

Mobility Issues - Experiences Explosion of smartphones/Tablets – Android and Apple – from Staff and Students, all wanting support Laptop/iPad support problematic in some lecture rooms – video connections & resolutions

Mobility Issues – Other issues Managing staff/student expectations: that all IT services available by the wired network should also be available via wireless without any degradation in service quality or performance. Finding the right balance between cost (of ever increasing wireless infrastructure) and user demand for accessibility and access. Departments buying iPads for their Staff - but they are told that damages and app purchase not supported in their budget (cost born by Staff)

Mobility Issues Questions?
