Call to Worship “Open Our Eyes”

1 I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalms 121:1-2 (HCSB)

O worship the King, all glorious above, O gratefully sing His wonderful love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise. “O Worship The King”

O tell of His might, O sing of His grace, Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space, His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, And dark is His path on the wings of the storm. “O Worship The King”

Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. “O Worship The King”

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail; Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend. “O Worship The King”

Offertory Prayer Receiving of Tithes and Offerings 2 Corinthians 9:6 “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”

During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female slaves, and his 11 sons, and crossed the ford of Jabbok. He took them and brought them across the stream, along with all his possessions. Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that He could not defeat him, He struck Jacob’s hip as they wrestled and dislocated his hip

socket. Then He said to Jacob, “Let Me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.” “What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob!” he replied. “Your name will no longer be Jacob,” He said. “It will be Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked Him, “Please tell me Your name.” But He answered,

“Why do you ask My name?” And He blessed him there. Jacob then named the place Peniel, “For,” [he said,] “I have seen God face to face, and I have been delivered.” The sun shone on him as he passed by Penuel—limping on his hip. That is why, to this day, the Israelites don’t eat the thigh muscle that is at the hip socket: because He struck Jacob’s hip socket at the thigh muscle. Genesis 32:22-32 (HCSB)

THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS October 14, 2007

I. THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS IS WHERE YOU ADMIT THAT YOUR WAY DOESN’T WORK.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 (HCSB)

II. THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS IS WHERE YOU LEARN TO BELIEVE IN GOD’S SUFFICIENCY.

“I have seen God face to face” Genesis 32:30 (HCSB) Without a doubt, the inferior is blessed by the superior. Hebrews 7:7 (HCSB)

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (HCSB)

III. THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS IS WHERE YOU CONFESS YOUR OWN SINFULNESS.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (HCSB)

Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not conceal my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You took away the guilt of my sin. Selah Psalms 32:5 (HCSB)

IV. THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNES IS WHERE YOU DESIRE A CHANGE OF HEART.

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26 (HCSB)

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalms 51:10 (HCSB)

V. THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS IS WHERE YOU ENTER THE PROMISED LAND OF FORGIVENESS AND CLEANSING.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9 (HCSB)

He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, Colossians 1:13 (HCSB)

CONCLUSIONS THE JOURNEY TO BROKENNESS IS WHERE YOU CAN’T ENTER YOUR WAY, IN YOUR POWER AND IN YOUR CONDITION (SINFUL).

CONCLUSIONS YOU CAN ONLY ENTER IF YOU ARE WILLING TO BE CHANGED. YOUR WAY DOESN’T WORK. ADMIT IT.

CONCLUSIONS GOD IS SUFFICIENT. BELIEVE IT. YOU’RE A SINNER. CONFESS IT.

CONCLUSIONS YOU NEED A CHANGE OF HEART. DESIRE IT. THE PROMISED LAND IS OPENED. ENTER IT.

All to Jesus, I surrender; All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. “I Surrender All”

All to Jesus, I surrender; Make me, Savior, wholly Thine; Let me feel thy Holy Spirit, Truly know that Thou art mine. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. “I Surrender All”

All to Jesus, I surrender; Lord, I give myself to Thee; Fill me with Thy love and power; Let Thy blessing fall on me. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. “I Surrender All”

Benediction
