Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Faith: An unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence. We do have evidence for our faith:  Bible / 66 books, 40 authors, written over 1600 years, fulfilled prophecy  We have the resurrection of Jesus  We have the testimony of changed lives

Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

I. Abel’s faith / Worship of God Hebrews 11:4 – “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testing of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.”

I. Abel’s faith / Worship of God  We do not know many details about Abel’s faith but we do know that his faith caused him to worship God  Man has a natural inclination to worship Romans 1:19 – “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them”

II. Enoch’s faith / Walk with God Hebrews 11:5 – “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”

Enoch’s faith / Walk with God Genesis 5:21-23 – “And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty and five years. And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”

II. Enoch’s faith / Walk with God  God was pleased with Enoch’s daily walk II Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

III. Noah’s faith / Work Hebrews 11:7 – “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith”

III. Noah’s faith / Work  Noah built an ark because he believed God  Genuine faith always produces works James 2:17 – “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”
