Trigonometry , Ratios & the calculator

Objectives : 1 ) To write an angle ( in decimal form ) using degrees , minutes & seconds. 2 ) To find the basic trigonometric ratios of a given angle using a scientific calculator . 2 ) ان تجد النسب المثلثبة الأساسية لزاوية معطاة مستخدماً الحاسبة العلمية . 3 ) To find the angle ( to the nearest degree. ) when the trigonometric ratio is given.

Angles are measured by the protractor. The unit of measuring an angle is the degree ( ˚ ) 1 min. = 60 sec. ( 1´ = 60 ˝ ) 1˚ = 3600 sec. ( 1 ˚ = 3600 ˝ )

Write 36.48 ˚ using minutes and seconds. Example ( 1 ) Write 36.48 ˚ using minutes and seconds. 36.48 0.48 × 60 = 28.8 0.8 × 60 = 48 So : 36.48˚ = 36˚ 28´ 48˝

Write 50˚ 48´ 12˝ in decimal form Example ( 2 ) Write 50˚ 48´ 12˝ in decimal form 48 12 50 + + ≈ 50.803 60 3600 So : 36˚ 48´ 12˝ ≈ 50.803˚

Write 50˚ 48´ 12˝ in decimal form Try the button о , ,,

We can round the angle 36.71˚ as: 36.71˚ ≈ 37˚ ( to the nearest degree ) 36.71˚ ≈ 36.7˚ ( to 1 d.p ) 36.71˚ ≈ 37˚ 42´ 36˝ ( to the nearest second ) 36.71˚ ≈ 37˚ 43´ ( to the nearest minute )

Using calculators Use your calculator to find the following trigonometric ratios ( correct to 4 d.p. ) : Sin 30˚ = Cos 47.8˚ = Tan 30˚ 18´ =

Using calculators Cos Ɵ = 0.6598 Press shift cos 0.6598 = We can find the angle Ɵ when we are given the trigonometric ratio , we use the inverse trigonometric ratios. Find Ɵ ( to the nearest degree ) given that : Cos Ɵ = 0.6598 Press shift cos 0.6598 = Display : cos-1 0.6598 = 48.715 ≈ 49˚

worksheet Name : ……………….……. Write the following angles in degrees , minutes and seconds : : اكتب الزوايا التالية مستخدماً الدرجات والدقائق والثواني 18.4˚ = 100.18˚ = 47.125˚ = Write the following angles in decimal form: : اكتب الزوايا التالية مستخدماً الصورة العشرية 18˚ 24´ = 35˚ 24´ 36˝ = 30˚ 30´ 30˝ = Mohamad Badawi Zayed althani school hamadaa_math@yahoo.com

worksheet Name : ……………….……. √ Use your calculator to find ( if possible ) the value of the following T.R. استخدم الآلة لتجد ( إن امكن ) قيمة النسب المثلثية التالية : Tan 45˚ = Sin 18.4˚ = Tan 90˚ = Cos 70.18˚ = Cos 0˚ = Tan 47˚ 27´ = Use your calculator to find the angle Ɵ ( to nearest degree , then to 1 d.p. , then to the nearest second ) : : لأقرب درجة ثم لأقرب منزلة عشرية ثم لأقرب ثانية )) استخدم الحاسبة لتجد الزاوية ثيتا √ 3 2 Sin Ɵ = 0.5 Sin Ɵ = Cos Ɵ = 8 2 Cos Ɵ = 0.3547 Tan Ɵ = 3.25 Tan Ɵ = 1 Mohamad Badawi Zayed althani school hamadaa_math@yahoo.com
