EO Ground Segment and Data Access Evolution Alice Springs Refurbishment Program Presented by Simon Oliver for John Frampton

Alice Spring Data Acquisition Facility CEOS WGISS40

Why we are modernising Drivers for change: Significant reductions in operational staff which has led to a reduction in reliability. Improvements in the communications link between Alice Springs and Symonston. Request from US to take a formal role in the management of Landsat 8 – the formation of a International Landsat Ground Station Network (ILGN). Need to process all ‘live’ satellite data – at the moment we are ‘throwing away’ half the live Landsat 8 data. CEOS WGISS40

Site Overview Landsat 7 and 8 data acquisition systems. Report state of health data for Landsat 7 to NASA in real time. Emergency management data acquisition systems – AQUA, TERRA, NOAA. Three antennas – 9m (data and state of health), 5m and 2.4m. Computer centre running with HP equipment running a number of virtual servers. Physical hardware running Centos and windows to directly control devices – antennas and demodulators. One person on site one day a week and support from Canberra – roughly onsite one week a month. CEOS WGISS40

Upgrade philosophy Increase reliability while decreasing complexity. Remove the need for the ground station administrator to have a detailed knowledge of the system/architecture. Increase system flexibility – make it simple and self documenting. Improve the systems ability to withstand failure (use a real time design paradigm). Use consistent industry standard approach to hardware and software components. Use repeatable, documented, (and where possible) automated, build process. CEOS WGISS40

What we have already done to modernise Major electrical upgrade. Replaced control unit for the 5m antenna. Significant improvements to the physical infrastructure. Extra cameras for remote monitoring. New monitoring equipment on site. A series of software upgrades to the mission planning and reception management systems. Construction of a future state architecture integrated into enterprise systems. CEOS WGISS40
