Differences, The Money Available

Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES are awards recognizing academic excellence or achievement, community involvement /leadership.  They may be distributed based on financial need or meeting certain geographical or demographic requirements. GRANT/AWARD is based on high grades and/or financial need.

Types of Scholarships Entrance scholarships: money awarded when you enroll in a school for the first time Renewable scholarships: money awarded that can be renewed every year (GPA dependent) National Scholarships: money awards open to students across Canada External scholarships: are money awards you get from non-post-secondary organizations

Money is available! There are over 70,000 scholarships, bursaries and grants, worth over $167 million, available on: You don’t need to have high marks 86% of the awards do not require a high academic average You don’t need to be in financial need Only 32% require you to be in financial need Get involved 10% of all scholarships require school/community service or leadership. You can’t win an award if you don’t try!

To Prepare Yourself

Step 2: Complete the Student Appraisal Form At the beginning of your grade 12 year, Student Appraisal Form Complete and submit the Student Appraisal Form (picked up and submitted in the Guidance office) Will be used to select potential school nominees for particular scholarships. Ex. Schulich Leaders, Loran

Step 3: Advocate Notify your counsellor if you feel you are a good candidate for a scholarship that requires you to be nominated by the school.

Step 4: COMPLETE your application Start early and give yourself plenty of time Make sure you have gathered any supplementary documents (reference letters, transcripts, essays, etc.) Complete the appropriate scholarship application form well in advance of the deadline Ensure all sections are accurately completed You may require the Principal’s signature, teacher/counsellor’s endorsement. Give plenty of notice to these individuals

The Essay Before starting read the instructions carefully Give yourself plenty of time Plan-jot down the points that you want to include Focus on QUALITY not QUANTITY Use clear and concise language Proofread..Proofread..Proofread

Letters of Recommendation Please provide staff with: 1. A one page summary outlining: Name and criteria of the scholarship you are applying to. Personal information – what makes you a good candidate for this scholarship/bursary/grant Community involvement Extracurricular involvement Demonstration of Leadership qualities 2. A minimum of TWO WEEKS notice to complete the letter

STEP 5. Sending in your Application Mail application before the deadline Use a courier service Print off confirmation of receipt

STEP 6-Receiving the Money Make sure you meet all the conditions to receive the money: full-time enrollment, maintaining residency etc. If you are required to attend an awards ceremony or luncheon, be there, be gracious and dress appropriately. Thank the donor, when appropriate.
