MAN UP BIBLE SERIES Living a Legacy Lesson Five

The Real World I wanted to have a lesson that spoke about our responsibility to mentor the younger generations of men. I was saved as a teenager and that inspires me to reach out to teens today and let them know that God has a plan for them! I want to challenge young people today to be courageous on their school campus. It is interesting to think that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a teenager and that some of the disciples were only young adults. If God trusted them with such responsibility why are we just trying to entertain them? I want us as men to set the bar high for the next generation. We cannot change our culture and reach the world for God without the present generation being engaged. One word today: MENTOR. Are we willing spend the time needed in order for them to be like Jesus? Daniel is an example of a young person who changed the world. That is what this lesson is all about!

The Real Word Daniel’s Training in Babylon 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezz asking of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia [a] and put in the treasure house of his god.a 3 Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility— 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. [b] 5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine f rom the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.b 6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego. 8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your [c] food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”c 11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead. 17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. 18 At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. 21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

Real Talk “Youth today see Christianity as a family heirloom rather than a faith Commitment.” How does this statement make you feel? Do you have a teenager that needs your direction? Are you willing to give it the effort needed? How can you help to make young men like Daniel in the Bible? Dare to be a Daniel!

Real Steps What we can learn from Daniel: Young People can make a difference. (Dan.1: 1-4) Young People can be strong in conviction. (Dan.1: 8) Young people can show great courage! (Dan.1: 1-19) Making good decision early in life builds on a brighter tomorrow. (Dan.1:12-19) Daniel showed great courage and kindness. (Dan. 2: ) Time alone with God will build a strong courageous faith. (Dan. 2: 46 – 48) You can be safe even in the Lions Den. (Dan. 6:4 -10) You must be willing to face the consequences of your Godly decisions. Courage has many faces, is one of them yours?

Time to Close Billy Graham the great evangelist of the 20 th Century once stated,” Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.” The bottom line is that our generation has wasted so much of what was given to us. This generation of young people are the ones who will have to rise up and take a stand for Jesus no matter what! The reality is that we need a new Jesus Movement here in America today! Teens who are not afraid to take their Bibles to school, pray before they eat and proclaim that Jesus is their Lord! That mantle of leading them and teaching them falls to us the Men of God who are willing to take a chance, to reach across the aisle! There are young people waiting who will change the world if we help them. It is time to MAN UP !
