Disney returned to feature length “story” animations in the 50’s Cinderella first introduced the rags-to-riches story line the world of movies Tinkerbell (Peter Pan) was based on legendary Marilyn Monroe Disney’s first all-live action film was Treasure Island (1950)

3 D,, and Aroma-Rama Cinerama was the first Imax experience viewers had at the movies 3D was used to bring audiences back to the movies after the war CLICK HERE TO SEE A PREVIEW FOR THE FIRST 3D MOVIE! Stereoscopic goggles or cardboard glasses were worn by viewers Viewers though the glasses were uncomfortable, clunky, and the viewing was blurry Aroma-Rama pumped oriental scents into the theater through the air- conditioning system

Combat and Anti-Communist Films Many films were made about American infantryman fighting in battles of WWII By the end of the Korean War many more combat and war-related films were made Many films portrayed communist as the villains or bad guys in films Many film critics said these movies made people appreciate what soldiers had gone through and fear communism The Cold War also inspired many Science Fiction films such as Destination Moon and the Day the Earth Stood Still

Adult Themes Marilyn Monroe is one of the most memorable movie star to appear in romantic comedy’s She was voted Best New Actor of 1953 by Photoplay Magazine Since TV was aimed at family audiences director such as Hitchcock and Stevens created movies with “adult themes” There were no movie ratings in the 50’s so directors took on controversial topics such as drugs, homosexuality, prostitution and rape

Musicals The 50’s was full of colorful, escapist, lavish classical musicals Musical helped transition Hollywood from the silent era to the talkie era Musicals were purely made for entertaining people and help people put aside the issues for a while Singing in the Rain became one of the most famous musicals ever made

Low- budget Western became popular in the 50’s due to ambiguous character rather than blazing action Some popular westerns were, 3:10 To Yuma, and The Searchers Many directors were targeted by the HUAC for supposedly being “Communist sympathizers” Fans enjoyed Westerns because they liked the good guy taking a showdown stand for justice

Two of the most famous “rebels” were James Dean and Marlon Brando Movie Rebels were known for their erotic emotional and dirty roles they played in movies Many of these movies were blacklisted due to McCarthyism, but the didn’t stop directors Some of the most famous movies starring Rebels are Rebel Without a Cause, A Streetcar Named Desire, and On the Waterfront
