THE BILL OF RIGHTS The First Ten Amendments

FIRST AMENDMENT Guarantees freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

SECOND AMENDMENT Gives the right to bear arms.

THIRD AMENDMENT No quartering of soldiers in private homes.

FOURTH AMENDMENT Bans illegal search and seizure.

FIFTH AMENDMENT Ensures legal protections and prohibits double jeopardy and forced testimony against oneself.

SIXTH AMENDMENT Gives rights to a lawyer, speedy trial, and a jury in criminal cases.

SEVENTH AMENDMENT Gives rights to a jury trial in civil cases (lawsuits)

EIGHTH AMENDMENT Outlaws cruel and unusual punishments and excessive fines (bail)

NINTH AMENDMENT Protects rights not listed in other amendments.

TENTH AMENDMENT Grants powers not in the Constitution to the states.
