Seabee Safety

Republic Seabee (Seabeeasaurus) 1028 built in1946 &1947 List price started at $ Less than 500 parts A flying plane with a hull below-very stable Powered by a Franklin 500ci, 215hp, engine Reversing prop Engine cooling fan-for idling on the water Great visibility-even rear seat pax ahead of wing 1050 lbs useful load 103 mph cruising speed Approved for skis Comes with free brick

3 Seabee Modes On the Land On the Sea and In the Air

On the Land Keep the area in front of the aircraft free of solid objects Keep the tail wheel in the middle

In the air Keep the airspeed indicator reading between 58 mph and 148mph. Keep the area in front of the aircraft free of solid objects.

On the Sea Think!!!! Go Slowly!!! – if it is going to happen in or around a Seabee, it should happen slowly. Raise the gear on every take off!!! Only put it down to land on land.

PREFLIGHT CHECK Copilot’s yoke stowed First aid kit AVAILABLE PFDs aboard and also AVAILABLE Brief your passengers; egress, PFD, inverted seat belt release, traffic watch Do normal preflight walk around

AD’s & SAFETY ISSUES Elevator trim operation Lift strut corrosion (AD – every 25hours) Prop safety spring Brake line quick release – fully connected Fuel placard

All these, so your passengers don’t act like this

Or so you don’t wind up like this It’s really hard to read the chart in there

PROCEDURES Radio on (especially amphibs) Fly with others (but not too close) One land, one watch, then land Watch SPB traffic 45 seconds across a lake (both ways) Emergency landing-flaps up, open throttle fully, pull prop control back to course pitch Large glassy lake –Put the sun over your right shoulder and watch your shadow You are flying seaplanes for fun. You don’t have to go until everything is right. Even Customs will understand.

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS Shoulder Harness Gear Alert Fuel Computer Water rudder safety cable Wing tip flotation First aid Kit Engine conversions Wing float mirrors (more effective in a bank)

Traveling – where to go? Seaplane bases and airports have good ideas Motels, camps or lodges with docks or beaches (you can tell the camps by all the same color boats) Parks with campsights Wherever you stop, someone has a favorite spot Ask Margaret

Canada Canpass canpass Lakes and rivers too numerous to count Seaplane friendly environment CAOPA

Seabee Development All flying boats in this country started here. Curtiss A-1 Triad. first seaplane, first amphibian, first Navy airplane.
