Lab 7: Cellular Respiration & Fermentation

Part 1: Alcoholic Fermentation Glucose Alcohol + CO2 + ATP

Part 1: Alcohol Fermentation Yeast + corn syrup CO2

Part 1: Alcohol Fermentation Test different amounts of yeast solutions – Clean tubes WELL and leave water inside soaking Design your own fermentation experiment – Different sugar substrates – pH buffers – Temperatures – Saline (salt) solutions

Part 2: Aerobic Respiration Design your own aerobic respiration experiment REMEMBER: Think about CELLULAR respiration, not lung-based respiration (smoker vs non-smoker is not a good choice)

Part 2: Aerobic Respiration Set up 2 beakers with bromothymol blue Blow through straw to see color change Add base to return beaker to control color

To collect your CO 2 produced, w/ a straw, blow into a beaker f/ 15 sec. Always try to blow about the same. Blowing should change the color. What is going on: CO 2 + H 2 O --> H 2 CO 3 carbonic acid gives one or more H+ ions to Bromothymol blue changing its color Add & count the drops of neutralizer needed to return the color to your starting point color. Part 2: Aerobic Respiration

The count of the drops of neutralizer is our measure of CO2 produced. The drops of neutralizer neutralize the CO2, returning the color to its starting color The more CO2 you blow out, the more neutralizer you'll need to return the color.
