The Election President: Rutherford B. Hayes__ Number 19 VP - William Wheeler 2. Political Party - Republican 3. Term of Office Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Ulysses S. Grant (Republican) preceded him and James A. Garfield (Republican) followed him. 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. The election of 1876 was a disputed election. Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote and also won the electoral vote but was one shy of a majority. The election was decided by Congress when a committee voted 8-7 for Hayes along party lines and Hayes promised to end military occupation and Reconstruction of the South.
