Ch 19/3 An Age of Big Business
Corporations- A corporation is a company that sells shares or stock, of it’s business to the public. * Can anyone name a corporation today?
Shareholder- The people who invest in a corporation by buying the stocks or shares are called shareholders and partial owners. Ever seen Mr. Deeds?
Dividends- In good times (when the economy is BOOMING) shareholders make dividends or $ from the corporations profits. If stocks are down your lose money, if stocks are up, you make money
Horizontal integration- Combining competing firms into one corporation. That would be like combining Target & Walmart
Trust- A group of companies managed by the same board of directors.
Monopoly- Almost total control by a single producer- in this case the oil industry Have you ever played monopoly the game? What’s the point of the game?
Vertical Integration- Acquiring companies that provide the equipment & services needed to do the job.
Philanthropy- The use of money to benefit the community Can anyone name a modern day philanthropist?
Mergers- Combining companies more easily. For example- At&t & Cingular Wireless
These are the vocabulary words from ch. 19/3. There will be a test on these words along with the words in ch. 19 section 4 next week. You need to study these words and learn their meanings to be successful on the test!
