How do we teach phonics at Puttenham?

Letters and Sounds A government programme that we follow. There are 6 phases. It has a simple lesson plan for each lesson and we can use Phonics Play to help us include ICT.

Phase 1- Early Years Environmental sounds Body percussion Musical instruments Nursery rhymes Rhyming words Oral blending Games! E.g. cross the river

Phase 2- Reception We teach at least 19 letters, and move children on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting with letters. By the end of the phase many children should be able to read some VC and CVC words and to spell them either using magnetic letters or by writing the letters on paper or on whiteboards. During the phase they will be introduced to reading two-syllable words and simple captions. They will also learn to read some high-frequency ‘tricky’ words: I, the, to, go, no, into.

Phase 2- Reception How? Letter progression (one set per week) Set : s a t p Set : i n m d Set : g o c k Set : ck e u r Set : h b f, ff l, ll ss

Following this lesson plan for each phoneme: Revisit and review ■ Practise previously learned letters ■ Practise oral blending and segmentation Teach ■ Teach a new letter (Jolly Phonics) ■ Teach blending and/or segmentation with letters (weeks 2 and 3) ■ Teach one or two tricky words (week 3 onwards) Practise ■ Practise reading and/or spelling words with the new letter Apply ■ Read or write a caption (with the teacher) using one or more high-frequency words and words containing the new letter (week 3 onwards)

Teach- In this section we need to- Hear it and say it See it and say it Say it and write it
