Lesson title: Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) LO: To understand what the MDGs are To create an argument about which is the most important goal Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Click me! Starter: These are the 8 goals. What do you think they are?

The situation now N-3HUFpwc Progress towards the goals is now threatened by sluggish — or even negative — economic growth, diminished resources, fewer trade opportunities for the developing countries, and possible reductions in aid flows from donor nations. At the same time, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent, with a potentially devastating impact on countries rich and poor.

1. Rank the goals from most to least important. 2. Explain why you have chosen the most important as the most important Extension question Do you think different goals are more suited to different countries? Explain your answer. (give examples if you can) Your opinion For example: I have chosen – a global partnership for development as the most important goal because......

Your goal 9SK Goal 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Adam and Rebecca, Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education Tomas, Lucy and Melina Goal 3 Promote gender equality and empower women Daniel, Sara and Kirsty Goal 4 Reduce child mortality Adi and Mabel Goal 5 Improve maternal health Natalie and Hanadi, Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Alannah and Hannah B Goal 7 Ensure environmental sustainability Emmet and Megan Goal 8 Build a global partnership for development Hannah L and Raphael

Your goal 9DH Goal 1 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger Nana and Ben Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education Juliette and Oscar Goal 3 Promote gender equality and empower women Enid and Ronan Goal 4 Reduce child mortality Henrick and Femke Goal 5 Improve maternal health Ebony and Joachim Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Nathaniel and Katy Goal 7 Ensure environmental sustainability Lokesh Goal 8 Build a global partnership for development Muhayman

In pairs read through the sheets you have been given based on your goal. Find out if the target has been a success or a failure. Once you know you will again speak to people in the class and find out the information for the rest of the goals. Level 5 - Will be able to say if it worked or failed. Level 6 - Will be able to describe, in detail, the outcome of each goal. level Can give specific examples as how each goal has either got closer to its target, or why it has not been achieved. Outcomes For example: Development goal 8 has not yet been achieved. Less aid money is being given out which effects the poorest countries.

Balloon debate You are going to have a 'hot air balloon' style debate. A hot-air balloon debate is a debate in which a number of speakers attempt to win the approval of an audience. The audience is invited to imagine that the speakers are flying in a hot-air balloon which is sinking and that someone must be thrown out if everyone is not to die. Each speaker has to make the case why they should not be thrown out of the balloon to save the remainder. In this case the debate is about which of the Millennium Development Goals is the most important. You will represent one of the Millennium Development Goals. You will write an oral presentation explaining why your Millennium Development Goals is the most important and therefore why it should be sorted first and with the most money and time.

Balloon debate What is the aim of the goal? Why is this goal the most important? How does this goal link to/ help the othergoals Examples (case studies) of where the goalhas worked and the positive impacts it hashad What are the barriers to meeting this goal? Why has the goal not been achieved yet? What resources/ actions are needed to helpthis goal succeed. What work needs to bedone. What are the consequences of not meetingthe goal. Statistics

Finally Do you think it is important that countries such as the UK contribute to countries that are less fortunate then ourselves?
