Health…Life! Salud…Toda La Vida! Partnership between Gulfcoast South Area Health Education Center and the Healthy Start Coalition of Manatee County. The goal of Salud…Toda La Vida! is to increase the quality of life and reduce chronic disease linked to obesity among Hispanic/Latinos in Manatee County. Partners have a long-standing and successful collaboration in implementing community-based projects targeting Hispanic/Latinos.

Salud…Toda La Vida! Project Implementation Community Health Workers (Promotores de Salud) will provide 100 presentations to a minimum of 150 individuals on the need for increased physical activity, improved nutrition, appropriate food portion size, and reduced screen time. Participants will be offered educational handouts, pedometers, and referrals to health and human service organizations and appropriate recreational opportunities. Capitalizing on Manatee County’s 13 th Annual Children’s Summit, exhibit booths encouraging movement through music, demonstrating the need for increased fruit and vegetable consumption and proper portion size, and the call to reduce screen time will be facilitated by CHWs and partners.

Salud…Toda La Vida! Project Implementation (cont.) An essay contest will be implemented in local high schools asking youths to share their views on how to successfully educate and motivate Hispanic/Latinos to reduce chronic disease linked to obesity. Community leaders will be involved in judging the essays and celebrating with the youths. Healthy Hispanic cooking recipes, appropriate food portion size demonstrations, and educational handouts will be provided at the annual Community Wellness Fiesta. The long-term sustainability of these activities is very feasible. Manatee County has strong health advocates in the CHWs, supporting organizations, community partners and leaders in the Hispanic/Latino community.
