Social Studies 11 Course Objectives K.J. Benoy

Introduction This is an enormous course to fit into 1 semester. Expect to work very fast. Each of the 3 component areas could fill an entire course.

Course Components. You will study the following three areas: Canadian Government. Canadian 20th Century History. Issues in Current World Human Geography.

History We trace Canada’s evolving role in the world; from a British colony to an independent nation, from a remote, unpopulated land, through 2 world wars and a Great Depression, to a significant nation.

Canadian Government We study how we organize ourselves politically. Ideologies and the political spectrum. Elections. Our Constitution. The Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches of government. Provincial & Municipal Government.

Geography We will examine the great challenges facing the world and the part we play in dealing with them. Areas of study include: The Global Village. World Population. Standards of Living. Resources. Global Solutions.

How Will We Do This? My teaching style is fairly traditional. It will involve: Lectures. Readings. Group & class discussions. Individual and group assignments. Essays. Map Work. Computer Labs (when possible). Quizzes & tests.

My blogsite My blog is my lesson plan – but it is more than this. Exam times and mark breakdowns are posted here. All assignments are hyperlinked from it. Supplementary material is linked to from it. Homework is posted there. Any important updates will be announced on the blog. Past blogs are archived here.

My Website Go to: – click through to my Social Studies 11 page or just bookmark ocialstudies11. ocialstudies11 Here you will find PowerPoint presentations that cover the entire curriculum. You can also link to pages on the 3 sections of the course, with much more detailed resources. Your assignments will also be posted here.

The Provincial Exam For some reason, this exam gives students trouble (though it is easier than most unit tests). You must look at the table of specifications and at the sample exam and key.

The Provincial Exam For the table of specifications, go to c.ca/exams/specs/grad e11/ss/08_table_specs. pdf

Provincial Exam The sample exam can be found at: c.ca/exams/search/ You can also link to the answer key here too.

Provincial Exam We will do some specific exam preparation at the end of the course, but you should be thinking about this throughout the term. Now is not too early to look at where we will get!.
