What is my child learning in 1 st Grade? All 1 st Grade students are expected to meet the expectations set by the State of Texas. TEKS: Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills Can be found on the TEA (Texas Education Agency) website.

What is my child learning in 1 st Grade? English Language Arts and Reading In first grade, students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. Students use a flexible range of reading skills in both assigned and independent reading to understand an author’s message. Students will continue to apply earlier standards with greater depth in increasingly more complex texts as they become self-directed, critical readers. How will we meet these goals? Guided Reading: small group instruction Daily 5: reading centers Shared Reading Mini-lessons
