Ubuntu Pronouced: ‘ oo-BOON-too’ Ubuntu is an African word that has a few meanings. 1)“Humanity to others” 2) “I am what I am because of who we all are” 3)“too beautiful to translate into English”

What is Ubuntu? Ubuntu is a free and open source operating system based on Linux. The standard Ubuntu OS is all free and open source, except for some of the hardware drivers.

Ubuntu Philosophy Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees. Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice. Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under a disability.

Features The basic package includes other popular open source programs, such as OpenOffice and Firefox. Ubuntu also offers a photo viewer/editor called F-spot and a music program called Rhythmbox.

Ubuntu Server Package Their server package is said to install in just 15 minutes and includes “just what you need to get up and running and nothing you don't.” On installation, the user has the option to install LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). Which could save the user hours of download and setup time. Another verion called JeOS – pronounced JUICE

Alternate Versions

While Ubuntu uses GNOME, Kubuntu uses the KDE environment. Also has an added program called Digikam, a photo viewing and editing program Kubuntu also a power management option in its most recent release.

Edubuntu is designed specifically for educational purposes. Has programs for students, such as OpenOffice, an Entertainment Suite, and programs to help teachers plan lessons. Also includes a program called Gcompris which is designed for preschool and kindergarteners, for math, reading, etc...

This version includes only free and open source programs. This means... “...no firmware, drivers, applications, or content included in Gobuntu that does not include the full source or whose license does not provide the right to use, study, modify, and redistribute the body of work.”

Uses the Xfce desktop environment which is intended mostly for users who do not have a machine capable of running other versions of Ubuntu. Also used by users with high end computers who want an extremely fast and efficient OS. Uses Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird ( ).
