Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs The VPAA, chairs and program leads for the 16 undergraduate engineering programs continue preparations for the ABET site visit scheduled for Oct The logistics of the visit have been developed and updated information required has been prepared. Chairs and program leads have been in contact with their respective program evaluators and the VPAA has been in contact with the team chair to finalize plans for the visit.

School of Extended Learning International Affairs would like to announce the Diwali Festival which will take place on Sunday, October 26. The program will kickoff at 5:30 PM with a cultural program in Leach Theatre and be followed at 7:00 PM with dinner. This is an annual presentation by the Indian Student Association.

School of Extended Learning Enrollment Growth: –The number of new international students arriving on the S&T campus this fall has increased from 172 in FS 2007 to 199 in FS Thirty three of these students are at the undergraduate level. –Distance education students have increased from 518 in FS 2007 to 603 in FS This total includes 136 students enrolled at the Engineering Education Center in St. Louis as compared to 103 at this time last year.

Office of Graduate Studies Company affiliation for new distance students has been identified, providing data for recruitment planning.

Office of Sponsored Programs FY09 activities through the end of September and a year- over-year comparison are as follows: –Proposals awarded in total dollars: $21.96M (up 80.1%) –Number of proposals awarded and amendments: 137 (up 63.1%) –Proposals submitted in total dollars: $43.44M (up 50.3%) –Number of proposals submitted: 174 (up 41.5%) –Research expenditures: $10.4M (up 10.6%) –F&A recovered: $1.9M (up 30.8%)

Office of Undergraduate Studies October 2008 Announcements We’ve Moved!-The Office of Undergraduate Studies has moved to 105 Norwood Hall. Missouri S&T Faculty Service Learning Award-In 2008, The Office of Undergraduate Studies will award a select Missouri S&T faculty member who involves or influence students in academic service learning or community service activities outside the classroom. The recipient of the 2008 Faculty Service Learning Award will be recognized at a campus award ceremony on October 22, 2008, in conjunction with National Make a Difference Day. LEAD Learning Assistance for Fall The Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines Program (LEAD) is pleased to announce that LEAD learning assistance for courses this semester began on Monday of the third week of classes. The LEAD schedule is posted online at LEAD provides individualized and small-group tutoring for over twenty-four foundational courses from algebra to thermodynamics (top half of the schedule), while forty-eight LEAD faculty associates run collaborative learning centers for thirty-two courses in eleven departments from elementary Russian to electromechanics (bottom half of the schedule). Fred Jones Tools for Teaching: Discipline, Instruction, Motivation- Fred Jones has been a pioneer in developing the fundamental skills of classroom management for over 35 years. His instructional methods increase learning time and mastery while his non-adversarial techniques of discipline management help even the most oppositional students become valued members of the group. Dr. Jones will share the techniques of highly successful teachers - the "naturals" - who make success in discipline look easy. He will emphasize procedures in the classroom that are low- key, reduce teacher stress, protect the student, and most importantly, self-eliminate. Negative techniques such as put downs and humiliation are replaced with strategies which create a cooperative classroom environment. The most common comment given by veterans and new teachers alike is "Why didn't I get this in college?" Dr. Jones is internationally recognized for his workshops which have trained thousands of teachers and administrators to use his management program. He is the author of McGraw- Hill's Positive Classroom Discipline and Positive Classroom Instruction. His widely acclaimed new book, Tools for Teaching: Discipline, Instruction, Motivation, won the Independent Book Sellers Award in 2001 and the coveted Golden Lamp of the Educational Publishers Association in Tools for Teaching: Discipline, Instruction, Motivation by Fred Jones is included in the workshop fee. Student Design Center News The Charles Henry Hammarstand Goodwin Scholarship has been awarded to Lisa Battern, senior in Electrical Engineering and member of the Solar House team. The merit based scholarship was established in honor of Charles Goodwin, a university student who died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident several years ago. His parents established the scholarship to support students that participate in the student design teams. Also, five Engineers Without Borders students were awarded $1,000 each from the Gavin Bradford Donahue Memorial Scholarship established through the Alumni Association. Gavin was struck by a car and fatally injured in the summer of 2007 while working on a construction project near St. Louis. The students receiving the scholarships are: Will Kirby, senior in Civil/Architectural Engineering Lucas Rottler, senior in Civil/Architectural Engineering Jennifer Hoffman, junior in Aerospace Engineering Katie Fritts, junior in Mechanical Engineering Jennifer Kelley, senior in Civil Engineering The SDELC has completed the first phase of their project management training in which the teams have submitted proposals for their design projects in 2008 and The second phase consists of a peer group of design team members who will review proposals and submit their comments to the SDELC. This process gives students the opportunity to read and review what others have written. At the same time it gives the student the ability to participate in the management process of determining the grants provided to teams as well as the level of support. Our goal is to receive constructive feedback, giving students the insight to make their project plans stronger for even greater success in the future.
