Lesson 1: Comparing and Ordering Integers

Number Line  Points to the right of the zero (the origin) represent positive numbers. Points to the left of zero represent negative numbers. Zero is neither positive nor negative.

Integers*  The set of counting numbers, their opposites, and zero; the members of the set (…,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2,…)

Integers  All whole numbers (0, 1, 2…) are integers, but not all integers are whole numbers.

 Give an example of an integer that is not a whole number.

 Counting numbers, whole numbers, and integers are examples of different sets of numbers. A set is a collection of items.

How are the sets of whole numbers and integers different? Set of integers (…,-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,…) Set of whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3,…)

Absolute Value*  The distance from the graph of a number to the origin on a number line.

Absolute Value  Absolute value is always a positive number because it represents a distance.  The absolute value of -5 is what?
