Black Codes Laws designed to take away the rights and freedoms of African-Americans Kept superiority of whites
Examples of Black Codes South Carolina- Workers shall not be absent from the workplace without the permission of their boss. Mississippi- Black may not quit their working contract. If a runaway employee is caught, the capturer is paid $5 per employee and 10 cents per mile. South Carolina- Black people may not have guns. Mississippi- Blacks may not get employment as mechanics or building/repairing houses.
Jim Crow Laws Designed to separate people of different races. Passed as black codes became unconstitutional.
Examples of Jim Crow Laws Arizona- Whites may not marry anyone of color. Florida- There must be juvenile facilities separate for black and whites and must be at least ¼ of a mile apart. Louisiana- A black may not offer to shake hands with a white. This implies social equals. Tennessee- Separate buildings for black and white patients in hospitals for the insane.
13th Amendment Gives freedom to all slaves Frees slaves in border states and territories Confederate states must agree to in order to be re-admitted into the US Freedman’s Bureau set up to help newly freedman adjust to new lifestyle.
14th Amendment Gives citizenship to everyone born in the US Gives equal rights to newly freed African-Americans Supported by Republicans in Congress To take away rights in the South, Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws grew
15th Amendment Cannot stop someone from voting based on race, color or former servitude (slave) Meant to stop discrimination of votes based on color or race Stop from voting based on poll taxes and literacy tests Poll Taxes- pay in order to vote Literacy Test- tested on ability to tread and write KKK uses intimidation to stop blacks from voting
