Sustainability and Waste

Sustainability

Risk and Sustainability  Which risk categories do sustainability programs help manage?  How does a sustainability program help manage internal and external client relationships?  How can a sustainability plan help manage construction and demolition (C&D) waste and non- conforming or surprise wastes?  How can a sustainability program help drive safety performance?  Why does a sustainability program help drive changing human behavior?

Risk Categories  Cost  Winning Work  Data Collection and Reporting  Meeting Customer Goals  Zero Harm

Client Relationships  External Clients  Aligning Cultures  Common Language  Winning Work  Internal Clients  Value to organization  Common Goals  Rally the Flag

Managing Waste  Construction and Demolition Waste  Definition  Waste as Future Feed Stock  Construction Project Cost Drivers  What Can You Control  Logistics

C&D Waste Overview Recyclable C&D Waste -Concrete, cardboard, clean wood, metals, masonry, plastic, rock, carpet, drywall, insulation, porcelain, rigid plastics, glass, tile, ceiling tile, and more Source Separated C&D Waste -Recyclables are placed into separate containers at the job site and sorted on site. Generally more cost effective than comingled and recycling rates can be as high as 90% or greater Commingled C&D Waste –Waste placed into one container on site, then separated and hauled off site at a material recovery facility (MRF)

11 “ The cost of your waste is not so much the cost of getting rid of it as the value of what you are getting rid of.” Unknown Cost of Waste

Cost Drivers  Planning  Transportation  Landfill fees  Recycling fees  Recycling rebates  Data collection

What’s In Your Direct Control  Planning  Site Logistics  Source separate vs. comingled  Regulations  Local resources  Vendor selection  LEED ® diversion goal  Data Collection

Safety  Planning  Vehicle routing  Public interaction  Good housekeeping  Construction Workers  WM staff/workers

Changing Behaviors  Execution Strategies  Create a Solid Waste Plan  Construction Phase  Occupancy Phase – (Sometimes overlooked)  Implement the Solid Waste Plan  Continuous Improvement  Measure, follow up, correct Start with the end in mind

Construction Project WMP Key Execution Strategies Creating a Solid Waste Management Plan During Design - Design for management of solid waste generated during occupancy Develop during schematic design, incorporate in design development, include in the project specification and materials selection, congruent with the Construction Waste Management Plan execution, adopted and implemented by occupancy and operations and facilities maintenance staff Implementing the Waste Management Plan during Construction Logistical planning- Planning in Design phase, execution during construction, education and communication components, diversion calculation, measurement and reporting Construction Phase accountability Management of solid waste generated during occupancy Develop comprehensive, realistic and efficient waste related operations and maintenance strategies in the Waste Management Plan Construction Design Occupancy O & M
