IGA-GIS Workshop for Educators Webinar 3 October 14, 2015 Suggested Webinar Topics The follow are webinar topics compiled from the summer 2015 Introductory ArcGIS Online workshop for Illinois teachers

 Before using GIS for turning on and off layers to compare data, how could teachers convey GIS principles?  What is GIS analogous to in terms of showing the same concepts, but without a computer for turning on and off layers? Transparencies

 What are the three functions of GIS? Display Data Analyze Data Data Collection and Management

 What are the 5 steps to the geographic approach? Ask Acquire Examine Analyze Act

Summer workshop participants submitted the following topics/ questions for follow-up webinars which are addressed in the subsequent slides:  Actual teacher applications of AGO in their classrooms  The Big Picture  GIS/ Geography Projects by grade levels  Building new layers on basemaps that aren’t pre-made from Esri  Links, resources for lesson plans, layers, databases  Grant/ funding opportunities for tech  Where else to get “free stuff”  Besides doing the slide spyglass, what other techniques can be used when layering multiple maps?  How to take data from GPS coordinates and overlay on a map  How to Import Maps  How to import “Then and Now Maps”  How to add images from Google Drive  Spatial Analysis Functions

Actual teacher applications of AGO in their classrooms  GPS Scavenger Hunts  Current Events – fires, floods, world conflicts  Lit Trips with Story Maps  Hometown demographics  Collect data with Collector App  Nature survey  Statistics and analysis using geospatial analysis tools  Public speaking practice with ArcGIS presentation tools  Service learning projects: work with community groups to develop maps for the benefit of your city or town. Examples: Map points of interest; open spaces and parks; schools and shopping  And more! Authentic learning: technology, internet, research best practices, database, spreadsheets

Links, resources for lesson plans, layers, databases Lesson Plans   Map Layers  Data (just a few examples)  USGS Earthquake data  The Census Bureau provides csv files for download  Burearu of Economic Development  The CIA World Fact Book

Grant/ funding opportunities for tech Edutopia - The Big List of Educational Grants and Resources  GoFundMe  State and local organizations – keep an open eye  ICE:  IGS:

Low cost refurbished computers Computer Banc  The Cbook from Computer Banc ($148) This may be used to create maps with ArcGIS Online (with the exception of ArcGIS “Scene” which is very slow)

The Big Picture Using GIS to Teach Common Core Reading and Math Careers in the world of geospatial technology Technology Competency Model el/competency-models/information- technology.aspx

Building new layers on basemaps that aren’t pre-made from Esri  Original layers may be created by uploading spreadsheets which contain coordinates or addresses of locations. This was covered in our summer workshop.  Comma-separated values (Save Excel file as CSV file)  A zipped shape file may be uploaded into the content area of ArcGIS Online. This was not covered in our summer workshop.  Add own data using Map Notes. This was covered in summer workshop.  Add gpx files from GPS data collection. This was not covered in summer workshop.  ArcGIS Desktop (professional version) allows for additional options for creating original layers which may also be imported into ArcGIS Online.

Besides doing the slide spyglass, what other techniques can be used when layering multiple maps? What kind of story do you want to tell? gives a list of all the Story Map apps and how they may be used to tell your story.

How to take data from GPS coordinates and overlay on a map CSV, TXT, and GPX files  You can add features to your map that are stored in a delimited text file (.txt or.csv) or a GPS Exchange Format file (.gpx). Below is more information on this topic:

How to Import Maps  How to import a shapefile into ArcMap  Using ArcMap Desktop (professional version) together with ArcGIS Online This is not something that was covered in our introductory ArcGIS Online class. Illinois teachers may request a copy of ArcGIS Desktop which gives them additional options for creating original maps. Please let us know if you would be interested in an ArcGIS Desktop workshop!  To get a ArcGIS Desktop License:

How to import “Then and Now Maps”  David Rumsey Historical Maps on ArcGIS Online 20Rumsey%20Map%20Collection

GIS/Geography projects by grade levels Visit this website to see many wonderful lesson plans for Illinois teachers based on grade level. Most of them could easily be adapted for ArcGIS Online:

How to add images from Google Drive Google images may be added to ArcGIS Online if the image is shared publically. How to –  Open image  Must have URL source of image – Source must be cloud-based

Analysis Functions Learn What Spatial Analysis Can Do for You This MOOC is a wonderful way to learn all about spatial analysis 
