ARAB SPRING Term was first used in 2005 when the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq occurred. Ultimately, it was thought that this invasion would inspire the spread of democracy throughout the Middle East. Associated with revolts against Arab rulers in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Syria.
LET FREEDOM RING Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech “I Have a Dream” is considered one of the most influential speeches in the civil rights movement. It was given on August 28, 1963 in front of approximately 250,000 Americans in Washington, D.C.
1989-TIANANMEN SQUARE In 1989, students protested the oppressive Communist government in China in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China. Inspired by the democratic changes that were occurring in the failing Soviet Union, Chinese citizens began to protest oppressive government policies and corruption.
WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE Women in the United States and England fought for women’s right to vote. The 19 th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920, giving women the right to vote. However, it does not give women equal rights to men.
PICKING AND PICKETING: CESAR CHAVEZ Cesar Chavez led the Farm Workers Association in order to get better rights for farm workers in the 1960s. Although he is not as well known as Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr., he used similar methods in order to get better working conditions for U.S. farm workers.
