Introduction Examined the feasibility of adding more security features and options around the campus of Hamline University. Researched how other college campuses keep their students safe and the features used on campus.

Introduction Compared Hamline University’s current Safety and Security office to that of the top most safe college campuses in the country. Identified which programs from other campuses that could be implemented at Hamline. Decided if these programs and technologies could be added to Hamline.

Criteria for Feasibility Is there enough of a threat of crime or a worry of crime by the student body to warrant increasing security measures? Would the funding be available to the Safety and Security office in order to make the necessary changes? Would students feel safer on campus if there were more security options or would their privacy rights feel violated?

Methods I researched into campus security looking for peer-reviewed articles I created a survey regarding safety and security around Hamline in order to gauge how safe students felt around campus. I distributed the survey to both sections of Professor Soria’s Professional Writing and Rhetoric class and the surveys were completed in class.

Methods I compiled and analyzed the data from the surveys into statistical information and graphs. I reviewed web stories regarding other campus’ safety and security offices and how other schools keep their campuses safe.

Crime in Midway St. Paul In 2014, Hamline University had a worse crime rate than the national average of college campuses. Midway, St. Paul has the worst crime rate of any neighborhood in St. Paul Need for excellent security features at Hamline is relevant

Interpretation of Primary Research Two-thirds of participants believed that there were not enough security features around campus. The majority of participants felt safe on campus during the day, however these results changed when day turned to night Participants were split between how comfortable they were with leaving belongings in the lockers.

Conclusions Feasible to acquire new security features on campus and implement new programs to help educate people about safety on campus. – Dorms – Locker rooms Having a more safe campus to lead to a more active campus.

Recommendation More research should be conducted. – Cost analysis Lighting around campus Easier contact with Office of Safety and Security or local police department Tighten locker room security – Security cameras – Security at doors of Walker Fieldhouse, Klas Center.
