High School Start Time Lodi Unified School District November 17, 2015

Background LUSD Board of Education requested information on moving the high school start time to later in the morning after reviewing information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). CDC states that hours of sleep for teenagers is key in reducing or preventing poor health outcomes and poor academic performance. AAP recommends that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. to allow teenagers time to get sufficient sleep and improve their health, safety, academic performance, and quality of life.

Current Options Change daily schedule for high schools only Expansion of Transportation Department (see attachment) Change daily schedule for all schools Attachments show schedules if high schools start at 8:00 a.m. and if high schools start at 8:30 a.m. (alternative programs are not shown) Add a 7 th period to current schedule to provide schedule options 1 st – 6 th period; 2 nd – 7 th period; 1 st -7 th period Keep current transportation schedule Additional staffing (2-4 FTE per high school) Keep current schedules in place Consider other strategies to help students get sufficient sleep
