P.E.P.P.E.RPlanning “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.” “Everyone wants to be a leader, but only those who work harder at preparation truly can lead.” – Mark Cuban Organized Provides a Framework Prevents Unnecessary Stress Types: Brainstorming Sessions; Vision setting, Goal Sheets; Organizational Objectives; Potential Obstacles

P.E.P.P.E.REnergy Its Contagious Charisma It’s How You Sell It Sometimes what you say, is not as important as how you say it Choosing Our Attitude

P.E.P.P.E.RPatience Each Brother is Different –skill sets and styles Analytical, Amiable, Driver, Expressive –Behaviors Inventory; Myers Briggs; etc –level of experience –level of buy in Coaching Styles -final product v. detailed process -frequency of check ups

P.E.P.P.E.R Patience Continued Be Slow to Respond! -Gather all your facts -Avoids emotionally charged responses -Avoid having to go back on a decision -negates the benefit of making a quick decision Unforeseen Problems

P.E.P.P.E.RPersistence “The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Have you Followed-up? Did he Follow Through? Document Everything -Vision, goals, plans, objectives, strategy Shows you’re serious – Keeps person/group on task Repeat back expectations

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Good Leaders show an understanding of others thoughts View it from their “perspective” – their style Servant Leadership Rewards and Incentives (what works for them?) -praise -tangible reward Disagreeing with Respect

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Conflict Management “There is no decision about whether we will have conflict in our life or not; the only choice is how we will resolve.” -Dr. Cal LeMon Types of Conflict Productive Passionate, unfiltered debate around issues of importance to the chapter. This must be mastered for a chapter to reach its full potential. Requires Trust. Destructive Conflict laced with politics, pride, and competition, rather than humble pursuit of truth People do NOT trust each other.

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Approaches to Conflict Avoiding Pretending it doesn’t exist Minimizing the differences Courage = Low Consideration for Relationship = Low Accommodating Allowing partner to have his way Roll with the punches; making peace **over time this can cause resentment Courage = Low Consideration for Relationship = High Forcing Arguing your point without conceding. Competitive nature. Yields short term gains but long term negative effects can be high Courage = High Consideration for Relationship = Low Compromising You both give up some ground resulting in partial happiness from both sides Looking for common ground Courage = Medium Consideration for Relationship = Medium

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Approaches to Conflict Collaborating Talk and Listen to the other party. Discuss and clarify your goals and areas of agreement. Ensure that other parties understand and acknowledge other’s positions. Consider ways to resolve the problem without any concessions. Think “outside the box”. Collaboration requires great courage as well as much consideration. Collaborators are generally interpersonally intelligent and are well respected and admired. Courage = High Consideration for Relationship = High

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Conflict Management Steps for resolving individual conflict: -Outline differences (similarities too) Could Break at this Time -Show appreciation of differences -“given me a lot to think about” -Decision required – role of authority – following convictions -Respect exists -How do we move forward? -Repeat back what was agreed to

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Conflict Management When exposed to new communication we all tend to: –hear what we expect or want to hear. –interpret any new information on the basis of our past experiences. –ignore any conflicting information by “correcting” or editing the message. –attach our own meanings to the words we hear. –become emotionally charged by vague or unclear messages.

P.E.P.P.E.REmpathy Conflict Management Environment Media Feedback Sender Filters Message Effects Of Other Messages Filters Receiver

P.E.P.P.E.RReflection Individual and Group What was the original goal? What went well / what could have been better? -How do I make it better next time? -Toyota & Patagonia Group -pros and cons -State of the Fraternity Find the Balance

Summary P -Planning E-Energy P-Patience P-Persistence E-Empathy R-Reflection = Leadership
