PX Equine Enterprises, Inc. StarrLee Heady M. A., LMHC EAGALA Advanced CHA II President PX Equine Enterprises Inc.

Provides EAGALA Model Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Programming Hosts & Provides EAGALA Model Training & Workshops Is the home of the Unbridled Warriors Inc. Non Profit program. Has been providing EAGALA Model Recovery programs in the Greater Jacksonville area since 2004

What is the EAGALA Model? EAGALA stands for Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Association. The EAGALA Model is a structure for conducting Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) & Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)

The EAGALA Model Solution Focused – Belief that clients can find answers Requires a Team Approach – Therapist – Equine Specialist – Horses Strong Code of Ethics –Required by EAGALA and by professional designation Focus on the ground –Participants do not “ride” horses. They relate to them during ground based activity

Why EAGALA? “Professionalism & Credibility” As a World Wide Organization EAGALA is the Global Standard for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy & Personal Development. A nonprofit with over 4500 members providing services in 50 countries & committed to setting the standard for excellence and professionalism in how horses & people work together to improve lives

Why Horses? Horses are large & can be intimidating but rely on social structure & communication to stay safe in the world As prey animals in a world of predators they have a highly developed sense of self & non verbal communication They continually explore social role & responsibility in their herds as well as with humans They continue to interact with us, as we change our behavior, they reciprocate with changing behavior in their interactions or relationships with us.

PX Equine Enterprises, Inc. Equine Experiential Work & Recovery There are Action & Understanding components of Recovery Equine Experiential work is supported by reflection, analysis & synthesis Equine Interactions require the participant to take initiative, make decisions & be accountable Horses & Humans are actively engaged in problem solving, communicating and exploring responsibility Feedback is “here & now” and non critical through the Horse interactions.

Recovery means practicing new or unused skills, horses can help! The words they say may not matter to the horse, but the honest, congruent, non verbal interaction, between our participants and the horse are the basis of change. These interactions allow participants to practice new problem solving skills, attempt uncomfortable communication, work through frustration, confront fear, and find out how it feels to behave differently. Our sessions with horses are real practice “arenas” for the challenges participants face when confronting the reality of addiction and recovery.

Our Recovery Arena really does have a horse in it!

PX Equine Enterprises, Inc. What is the role of the horse in the recovery arena?

What to Expect in the PX Arena Horses are not impressed with talk, you must “walk the walk” of recovery Horses understand who we are in the moment, their very survival has depended on that ability Expect honesty Horses are forgiving and will change their way of being with you, if you can change Working with the horses provides metaphors for the real life challenges of recovery. Coming up with a solution while dealing with a 600 to 1200 pound animal requires participants to focus, solve problems, and accept the immediate and honest feedback that the horse can give. It is a powerful experience in a real time practice arena.

PX Equine Enterprises, Inc. The EAGALA Model works for Recovery! In 2004 the Recovery program at Stone Fox Farm in Geauga County Ohio assisted in reducing the recidivism rate for Juveniles with Addiction charges in the Juvenile Court from 60 % to 16 % Less than 16% of the Juveniles that completed the EAGALA model program return to court. This program is ongoing

PX Equine Enterprises, Inc. PX Equine Enterprises Inc. Outcomes Utilizing the YOQ measure with addictions clients seen at PX Equine Enterprises Inc. analysis was done of six subscales; Intrapersonal Distress (ID), Somatic (S), Interpersonal Relations (IR), Social Problems (SP), Behavioral Dysfunction (BD), and Critical Items (CI). The OQ was administered Pre, Mid, and Post program. All six subscales showed a decrease in symptomology over the course of the 6, two hour sessions. There was a significant difference in intrapersonal distress from initial assessment to final assessment, t(7)=2.8, p<.05. A majority (75%) of the pilot study participants had YOQ-SR scores at the last session compatible with a normal range of symptoms (46 or below) as established by Burlingame et al. (1995) in their sample tests of normal populations
