D/C Power Systems General Locations

There are two types of D/C Power sources on the new fireboat: 24 Volt 12 Volt These are further subdivided into three types of distributions: D/C Main Services D/C Emergency Services Engine (Prime Mover) Starting D/C Power Systems

The 24V and 12V Main Power Systems provide power for devices and end users that are important to the operation of the fireboat. The 24V and 12V Emergency Power Systems provide power for devices and end users that are critical to operation of the fireboat. The Engine Starting batteries are independent to the engine they start, and are not tied into any of the 24V or 12V Service Systems. D/C Power Systems

We will describe the 24V and 12V Main and Emergency Service Systems by starting in the wheelhouse, and working our way down into the machinery spaces – identifying each D/C Service System as we locate it. We will then describe the Engine Starting Battery systems in the Engine Room. D/C Power Systems

The pair are in series to create 24 Volts, and those pair are placed in parallel with another pair to increase the depth of power available. There are (8) 8D batteries in this system, and they are difficult to access. A good day to call in sick when they need replacement!

The D/C Power for engine starting comes from independent pairs of 12 Volt AGM batteries, in series, under or near each of the following engines: Starboard Main: Under E/R floor plates between Pump Engine 1 and Starboard Main. Two (2) 8D batteries in series. Port Main: Under E/R floor plates outboard of Port Main Engine near Lufkin Gearbox. Two (2) 8D batteries in series. Pump Engine #3 (C-12): Under E/R floor plates outboard of Starboard Genset. Two (2) 4D batteries in series. Starboard Genset: Under E/R floor plates outboard of Starboard Genset. Two (2) 31 series batteries in series. Port Genset: Under E/R floor plates, and under Port Genset. Two (2) 31 series batteries in series. At this time, these starting batteries are configured to be re-charged from their respective engine’s alternator only, but we are working on getting independent chargers installed… Note: These batteries are also difficult to access, another good reason for sick leave.
