E-Learning to support SAET activities

Overview What is e-Learning CLP4Net Proposal: Structure for an e-Learning supported SAET activity

Definition Use of electronic technology to deliver and access course content from anywhere at any time. Interactive. Communication between teacher and student.

Benefits Minimizes delivery cost Anytime, anywhere Easy to track Possibility to preserve user privacy. Can be tailored to a specific group. Proven technologies and solutions available. Standardization of the content and structure.

Cons Some degree of familiarity with technology is required. Some students might prefer being in a classroom. Technical issues. Reliable internet access a must. Potential lack of feedback from the trainee. It is easier to “cheat”.

CLP4NET Cyber Learning Platform for Nuclear Education and Training Provided cost-free Moodle based IAEA provides a package. Hosting for external partners, not provided.

Other similar initiatives SAET Knowledge sharing over recorded presentations. No other real interactive e-Learning programmes.

Course organization Pre-course Course delivery Post-course E-learningAt venue On the job/mentoring Initiation Closure

Initiation of activity Triggered by MS or IAEA Positive review of request Alignment of course with SAET

Course design Course title ▫Type (e-Learning, self learning, on-site, etc.) ▫IAEA Programme Course objectives Background (state of the art) Target participants ▫Required experience or background Expected outcomes Content outline

Pre-course Selection of subtopics Selection of instructors Provision of material for preparation for the course and self evaluation Self evaluation by participants ▫Feedback to participants based on the self evaluation Development of lecture timing and titles / Agenda Request for participant presentation (if applicable)

Course delivery Preparation of course materials according to IAEA guidelines ▫Lectures, exercises, exam. Independent review of materials by IAEA technical divisions Implementation plan Implementation ▫E-Learning module (non-simultaneous), webinar (simultaneous), at venue, mentoring, on the job.

Post-course Exam and discussion of results (20% of overall course resources to be devoted to this topic) Participant evaluation of the course ▫feedback to instructors Achievement certificate or Attendance certificate Lessons learned to IAEA (by instructors and IAEA) Review and backup materials to GSAN for future reference

Closure of activity Consolidating of material Overall assessment of activity by IAEA Ensuring alignment of course to SAET curriculum Archiving of activity

Moodle pre-course structure Objective of the course Pre-course goal, expectations and required tools Short Bio of instructor Preparatory materials ▫Files, links, lectures, papers, supporting documents Self evaluation If submitted provide feedback to participants based on self evaluation

Moodle course structure for each lecture – instructors(w) participants(r) Abstract (max. 300 words) Objective (max. 100 words) Topic development ▫List of content ▫Materials  Written lecture notes needed Exercise/Quiz (optional) Conclusions (max. 300 words) Keywords Literature (References) Exercise/Quiz solutions (optional) Annex (Supporting materials, If needed)

Moodle Course Exam (motivational) Evaluation of learning process of the student At least 20% of the length of the course Collaboration in exam development by all instructors Types of exam ▫Written ▫Presentation of acquired knowledge ▫Exercise ▫Etc.

Conclusion E-Learning is a valuable tool widely used in training and competence building. As a first step, e-Learning can be used to complement ongoing or future SAET activities. There are many challenges to be tackled by the IAEA in order to provide complete modules. Feedback is key.
