Assessment Without Levels

Aims of the session  To outline changes in assessment  1. How will my child be assessed?  2. How will I know if my child is making progress?  3. What terminology will be used to describe my child’s progress now that levels do not exist?

 To outline the key changes in the current curriculum  Teaching and learning in the maths and English curriculum.  To outline changes to the statutory tests in Year 2 and 6

Previous levels 2b in maths  What does it mean?  What can your child do?  What does your child need help with?

 No longer level descriptors.  No prescribed way of assessing, all schools can choose how.  Children will be assessed against their national curriculum band e.g. Year 4-band 4

 We have developed our own tracking system to ensure that we track your children effectively to ensure they make expected or better progress throughout their time at Portway as well as attaining their potential.

Age Related Standards For each year group there will be steps children will need to achieve: 1.Beginning 2.Beginning (+) 3.Within 4.Within (+) 5.Secure 6.Secure (+) By the end of the year the expectation will be that the majority of pupils will achieve ‘Secure’ and a small number of pupils will exceed these steps.

 Tests and tasks the government sets for children aged  Designed to assess their knowledge and skills in english and mathematics. New SPAG for Year 2  This year they will not be reported in levels. SATs

 Some of the content is totally new.  Existing topics are being introduced a year or two earlier.

New National Curriculum Programmes Of Study For each curriculum area there are different programmes or areas of study and for each year group there are age related standards within the programmes of study Each subject has had changes made to it and the core subjects quite significantly. Expectations are higher so for example, concepts which were taught in Y2 are now being taught earlier in Y1. Lets look at English- PoS

English Curriculum: Main changes Continued emphasis on systematic phonics, including a progression in teaching, which is already well established in our school. At all levels, there is emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as vocabulary development. There is a focus on reading for pleasure with all children encouraged to ‘read widely across both fiction and non-fiction …, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum’. This includes the school, setting ‘ambitious expectations for reading at home’. Spoken language is a huge focus in the English curriculum, with the inclusion of ‘talk for writing’, reciting poetry, debates etc.
