Its History The parish of San Gines is a Catholic temple under the patronage of San Gines of Arles. The first references to the worship of San Gines of Arles in Madrid was in the IX century, but the origins of the parish can be found in a old hermitage mozarate that would have existed in these place in the end of the XIII century. The parish had three fires and they had to build three times. The parish is very famous of its arcs that are carpanales arcs and its style neo-plateresco. This parish was in the civil war, was as a headquartes and have some damage by bombing in the 40s and 50s. was build in the arenal, a kind of stream where was flow all the stream and sands that goes slides down streets.

Where is? The parish is in the street Arenal Nº 18 (north), 8 of the street of Bordadores (west) the Plazuela of san Gines (south) and the Pasadizo of san Gines (east) in the distrito Centro.

In which year was build? The parish was build in the middle of the 17 century along with paintings and pictures that are inside and much historical, artistic and architectural of what was called Madrid of the Austrias.

What did they build it for ? The parish was built for the inhabitants of the street Arenal to have a place to pray their prayers. they needed a church to stay together and to pray to one God.

Who paid to build and who built it? The parish was built by a famous archited called Jose luis Marín but the parish had a fire and the other archited who built for the second time was namedJose María Aguilar. When the parish had the other two fires he rebuild it.

Inside of the parish have a virgin with a stuffed cocodrile or an alligator. It has a lot of paintings and architectures.

Leyends, stories and anecdotes The church has a lot of stories but I said one called Where is the Virgin de los Remedios which became famous by a dissected cocodrile that is under the Virgin. The leyend recounts the story of Alonso of Montalbán,confiscation by the Catholic monarchs of his travel to America had an alligator attack of cocodriles while they went with their boat and they decided to went to the island Portobello when they were in land were a gigant cocodrile chased them. A giant tree was falled in the cocodrile and killed it, in appreciation Alfonso took the cocodrile to the church. Consist of a slide with grown, place where was the old cementery of San Gines, with three arcs in the center.
