Trebbia to Lake Trasimene 217 BCE.

After Trebbia  After his victory at Trebbia Hannibal and his men start to run out of food.  The local towns hate him because he is consuming all the food in the area.  After numerous attacks on his army and continued hunger he decides to cross the Apennines.

Apennines  This third mountain range proves too much for his army.  They encounter a winter storm that kills all but one elephant.  He returns to the Po river valley.  He waits till summer and crosses the Apennines again, this time he is successful.

Gaius Flaminius Nepos  Faminius was elected to as the new consul (dictator?).  He led four new legions to attack Hannibal.  Hannibal marched his army to Lake Trasimene to set a trap for Faminius.

Battle of Lake Trasimene  Hannibal camps his army in a narrow pass between the mountain and the lake.  He hides a large portion of his army in the mountain side opposite the lake.  This forces the Roman army into another ambush.

The Department of History, United States Military Academy

Battle of Lake Trasimene  Flaminius was over confident and too eager for a fight.  When he saw Hannibal’s camp he marched his army straight into the narrow pass.  Once his army was spread out in the pass, Hannibal’s troops came down from the mountain.

Defeat at Trasimene  The Romans become encircled and have no where to run.  Flaminius is killed along with the majority of his army.  Word reaches Rome and panic ensues.  Hannibal sends a message to Carthage that the Romans are beaten and the war will soon be over.
