Notes of Harmony Exploring and sharing our cultural identities by interpreting our musical heritages This project was financed with the subvention of the European Commission. The author only is responsible for the contents of this publication (communication), the commission is not liable for the further use of the containing statements.

Children shared the musical heritages of each participating country through various activities. DRAWING SINGINGDANCING INSTRUMENTAL PLAYINGWRITING DRAMA

Along with these activities they learned a lot about the four countries and the mentality of these nations. They found out characteristics - about the geographical situation of the participating countries - about the history of the four countries - about the different customs and traditions in each country - about the way of life in the partner countries - about the life, the works and the feelings of some special people

These experiences have been extremely valuable to support the creation of tolerance and understanding towards the cultural differences. The following examples can give an impression of the activities at FLORENBERGSCHULE KÜNZELL GERMANY

DRAWING A memorial for J.S. Bach Venus – The Bringer of Peace A collage to G. Holsts music The Planets A portrait of the Turkish composer Aşik Veysel

WRITING POEMS In Germany a well known poetic form for children in primary school is called Elfchen. The poem has got eleven words and the lines dont have rhymes. The first word is (for example) a feeling, a colour or a quality. The second line contents two words which describe this feeling (colour, quality). The third line contents three words and the forth four, which tell more details to the word in the first line. The fifth line has got only one final word. 4th-class-pupils have written Elfchen to Chopins Etude op.10, No.3

Childhood Frédéric Chopin was born in 1810 in Zelazowa Wola (about 50km westwards from Warsaw, the capital of Poland). Nicolas Chopin, his father, came from France, his mother, Justyna Krzyzanowska, was Polish. Half a year after the birth of Frédéric the family moved to Warsaw. The members of the family often played musical instruments together. Frédérics father played the violin and the flute, his mother played the piano. Gustav Holst (according to an idea of our English colleague Kathryn Turner) and Frédéric Chopin

Life and Works of the four Composers Frédéric Chopin Gustav Holst Aşik Veysel Johann Sebastian Bach All the details our pupils learned about these composers have been summarized in a game. The children found the questions and answers by themselves.
