What problems should the government focus on? Should it focus on reducing crime? Improving the economy and creating more jobs? (jobs and the economy are closely related so I put them together). What about helping poor people? Isn’t stopping terrorism very important too? Each table needs a piece of paper and pen: try to reach an agreement on which are the most important. Rank these four areas from 1 to 4. 1: ___________ 2: _____________ 3: __________ 4: ___________ After we do a survey we will discuss our thoughts with our classmates, but first just try to reach an agreement on the 4. If you can’t reach an agreement “flip a coin”! This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU? Reduce crimeJobs and the economy Help the poor or needy Stop terrorism

Before we discuss our reasons, let’s compare our class results to what Americans think right now. What can you say about the differences between our class and the Americans that were surveyed above? Example: “I think Americans are more worried about Terrorism than Chinese people because they start so many wars!!!!” ;) Next: lets ask our partners: Is helping the poor more important to you than a new job? Why yes? Why no? I think improving the economy is most important because ___________________. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

What are the people above doing? Which American states have the most illegal immigrants ( 非法移民 )? (Note: some people also call illegal immigrants “unauthorized immigrants”=illegal immigrants) My state is Washington (in the upper right/northwest) we are near Canada … so do we have lots of illegal immigrants? Let’s talk with our classmates and try to guess which states and why … each table pick 3 states…. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

Do these results surprise you? Why yes? Why do these facts surprise you? What is something that most of these states have in common? Where is Mexico ( 墨西哥) ? Where is Cuba (古巴) ? What can happen to a person who is an illegal immigrant in America? Will they be deported? Will they be put in jail? Can they still work? If it is illegal to work, do people still do it? Do they get good jobs or bad jobs? This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

In the year 2001 there were 189,000 deportations. That is 189,000 were deported from America and sent back to their home country. It is now the year 2014/2015, do you think there are more or less deportations now than in the year 2001? Let’s discuss this with our partners … why we think yes… or why we think no … it is not important to get the right guess … but it is important to try to speak about your ideas!!!! Then we will look at some statistics regarding deportations ….. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

Why are deportations increasing? I think deportations in America are increasing because ________________. I disagree….I think the reason is because _________________. What else do these statistics tell us? This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

What does “tech” mean? It just means “technology”…that’s all. Now, we are going to look at some statistics which compare the number of men and women who work in tech jobs for large global/international companies. What percentage of Google/Yahoo/Intel. Let’s try to guess: Examples: “I think 40% of Google’s global workforce is female.” … or … “I think about 50% of Yahoo’s employees are male. … or ….I think it is less than that because ___________. I think it is more than that because _____.” This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

Do these statistics surprise you? Are these about American jobs or these companies international workers? … These are global statistics … not just for America … Why do so few women work in tech jobs? Do men like to work in the fashion industry? This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

How many people get an American “green card”( 绿卡 ) each year? Let’s try to guess …. Each table needs to try to guess….. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

Why has the number of immigrants changed so much? In 1991 over 1,750,000 people got an American green card. However, that number has dropped to about 1,000,000. One million new people is a lot, but why did it decrease about 50%? Let’s ask our partners why? Now … for a different question: How do most people actually get a green card? Example: “I think most people get a green card because of _________work/family relationship/marriage __. This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU?

So, if you want a green card it is best if you either get married to a US citizen or another person who already has a green card. Or, after a person gets a green card they can usually become a US citizen within 5 years if they want that. Then they can file applications for other family members. And in fact that is exactly what happens. Is immigration good or bad? This map is easier to read. Let’s ask each other: What language do they speak in _______ ? People in ____ speak__? What is that country (which is white/blank) south of Germany and east of France and north of Italy? Why aren’t they members of the EU? Spouses (spouse=wife or husband ) of a US citizen 27% Spouses (spouse=wife or husband ) of LPR=person with green card 9% Children of US citizens10% Brothers or sisters of a US citizen6% Parents of US citizen10% ____ Total family-based green cards: 62% Employment-based (that means they got a green card because of work 14%
