Lawson and Baud-Bovey Typology of Recreationists and Tourists

TOURISM Tourism is a ‘style’ of recreation Characterized by –a travel component –a temporary relocation of residence

Practical Definition of a Tourist The boundaries of an economy obviously influence the definition of a tourist, since non- resident spectators are defined as pleasure travelers, a label synonymous with tourists (Turco & Kelsey, 1992). Common characteristics of a tourist definition include travel at least 50 miles (80 k) one-way and an overnight stay, and pleasure travel as a primary or secondary purpose of the trip. Those who do not stay overnight would be considered excursionists.

DEFINITION OF TRIPS Isolation of impacts Problems when we attempt to define a recreational trip Government definitions are not built for purpose (why people travel) - rather for statistical convenience So we only tend to count travel that is significant

In the Census of Transportation, USA, only trips that take the traveler over 100 miles are counted In Canadian Travel surveys trips must take travelers away from home for an overnight stay The definition of a trip depends on who is conducting the survey - What does this do for consistency and cross-comparison?

In Australia a tourist is a non-resident staying less than 12 months In Israel a tourist is any non-resident entering on a tourist visa - except for an immigrant, temporary resident or air passenger in transit In the USA a tourist is any non resident who visits for business, pleasure, or study or is in transit between countries - except for Canadians who only count if they stay overnight
