 Spanish II is an in-depth course that will review and study many of the same topics presented in Spanish I but to a greater degree. Speaking, writing, listening, and reading skills will expand as you are challenged with the language. Students will continue to study the Hispanic culture and traditions and will have the opportunity to make presentations about the culture. One of the main grammatical themes for Spanish II will be learning how and when to use the two different past tenses, preterite and imperfect.

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:  Comprehend significant ideas and most supporting details.  demonstrate increasing fluency and control of vocabulary;  understand oral and written discourse, with few errors in comprehension when reading; demonstrate culturally appropriate behavior

 At LACHSA, a teacher may issue a failing grade to a student if they have unexcused absences for more than ten percent of the course periods in a given semester as follows:  Course meets 2-3 times per week (Periods 1-6)  Five unexcused absences in a semester is excessive. When a student earns five unexcused absences, a teacher must notify the parent/guardian that if a student earns a sixth unexcused absence, a failing grade may be issued for the semester.  Class work will be assigned every day- if you are absent, it is your responsibility to see what you missed. Keep in mind that if there’s a scheduled test or quiz you need to come prepare to take it when you return to class.  This course is considered high intermediate level. It is a challenging course taking in consideration that students will be presented with high standard vocabulary with a lot of synonyms and cognates, a broad of grammar that deals with many complex tenses and clauses as well as idiomatic expressions. In addition, there will be a demanding immersion in Spanish literature and deeper knowledge of the Spanish culture. Consistent oral conversation, written composition, and listening and reading comprehension will be ongoing activities perform in class in accordance to the National Standards for Learning Languages with the Common Core Standards for World Languages.

 Instruction in Spanish 4 consists of a communicative approach with an emphasis on grammar, vocabulary, literature, and culture to strengthen a student’s proficiency in Spanish. Students will have an opportunity to reinforce reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills through individual and group activities. As this is a higher level course, students are expected to keep up with the pace of content and reading assignments.

 1. develop a clearer understanding of the Spanish language and greater sensitivity to structure, vocabulary, and syntax. 2. apply higher order thinking skills when solving problems, reasoning, analyzing, conceptualizing, and communicating. 3. value, understand, and respect other people and cultures. 4. interact with persons of other cultures through listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. 5. recognize the increased personal development and career potential that accompanies learning a second language.
