Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough was a portrait and landscape painter. He was the first British artist to paint his native countryside. His works contain much poetry and music.
His portraits are pointer in clear tones; blue and green are predominant colours. They typically are images of elegance and self-assurance.
One of his most famous works is the portrait of the Duchess of Beufort. He managed to create a true impression of the subject.
More sympathetic are his “painting of his friend like” Johann Fisher which is elegant and genial.
His landscape backgrounds to portraits are free, with srong feeling for woodland.
In his last years he developed “Fancy Pictures” in which figures, usually children,are posed in landscape and generate a poetic melancholy.
His masterpieces are “The Blue Boy”, Mrs. Sheriden. His peculiar features grey and blue colours, romantic painting, the creator of landscape painting.
